Tek L.
Head Coach
Tek L. - DW Head Coach
Tek was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He started paddling as a sophomore in high school with Mission Dragon Boat in 2006. He continued on to paddle with Stanford Dragonboat, California United, and finally Dragon Warriors. He raced as a part of Dragonboat Team USA U24 in Tampa 2011 as well as Welland 2015. He also raced with California United for Club Crew in Ravenna 2014.
Dragon boat means having an active lifestyle and being part of a wonderful community. Being on a boat with 19 other paddlers means there is a high level of trust and synchronization to be successful. Tek loves the atmosphere and he enjoys the competition.
Outside of being a dragon boat coach, Tek is an elementary school teacher. He brings a lot of his teachings and learnings in both the dragon boat world and the classroom. He also paddles surfski and outrigger canoes. His favorite food is a 4×4 animal style In-n-Out burger with well-done fries. One thing you might not know about Tek by looking at him is that he used to wrestle and run track & field in high school.

Jack Z.
Jack Z.
Jack was born and raised in San Francisco, California and has been paddling since 2019.
He and his wife, Rachel, started with San Francisco Dragon Warriors’ Friends and Family day and shortly thereafter, both joined the team. Jack’s goals were to get into better shape, improve his paddling skills, and be part of a close-knit community. It took many months of practices where Jack’s endurance improved, got stronger, slowly improved his paddling techniques and made friends with some great people.
Jack has been working for over 35 years and most of it in technology in the healthcare, construction and hospitality industries. He is currently working at a company focused on providing end-to-end quality care services to our senior population.
In addition to dragon boat paddling, Jack also enjoys playing tennis, running and exploring. He enjoys simple foods like Shanghai style won tons in chili oil, steamed pork buns, dim sum and nuts (yes, he is what he eats). When you see him, you will see someone who is quiet, introverted, humble, and calm – but during race day, he is extremely competitive.

Started dragonboat in April 2022 as a way to make new friends in my new city and could not have foreseen going to Sarasota, FL nationals in 2023, let alone world championships in Ravenna, Italy 2024!
I don’t really know what jobs my teammates have outside of the boat nor what industry they are in, but I do know what new show they’re into and what new unhealthy snacks their (grand)children are currently fighting over.
It doesn’t matter what socioeconomic background / age / salary / race / sexuality / etc. you have, what matters is that you’re a caring teammate and always willing to improve. I am happy to belong to a community that is accepting and open.
It is true, teamwork makes the dream work.
